French magistrates in charge of investigating evidence of criminal behaviour among the entourage of L’Oréal heiress Liliane Bettencourt will next week place former minister Eric Woerth under investigation, one step short of charges, for “illegal financing of a political party”, according to sources close to the case. The move would be a major embarrassment for President Nicolas Sarkozy as it centres on suspicions that Woerth collected from Bettencourt illegal and significant cash sums for Sarkozy’s 2007 presidential election campaign, for which he served as treasurer.
