President Nicolas Sarkozy is poised to nominate a close political ally to head France’s national statistics and economic studies institute INSEE, Mediapart has learnt. The move threatens to undermine the independence of an organisation that is the reference point for impartial measurements of the French economy, and is all the more controversial for being orchestrated amid Sarkozy’s campaign for re-election in the two-round presidential poll that begins in April.
