Part of the central thesis here rings true for me. At the beginning of 2019 I began to sense that the local gilets jaunes populating a roundabout near me were celebrating something as well as protesting. Their sausage barbecues & happy, smiling waves as I sounded my car's horn looked like a display of community as much as an objection to unjust tax measures.
