The 76 year-old man, given the Carmat artificial heart at the Georges Pompidou hospital in Paris in December, died for reasons still undetermined.
Doctors say the 75-year-old patient with the new heart is eating normally and able to sit up 12 days after transplant operation.
The Georges Pompidou Hospital said the male patient who received the heart, which will beat at least five years, was awake and responding well.
