The ports of Saint-Malo, Ouistreham and Calais were subjected to a brief blockade by French fishers on Friday in what they called a 'symbolic' warning of how they would block freight moving across the Channel if the UK does not provide them with more licences to fish in its waters.
As talks over their demands for the granting of more post-Brexit fishing licences in UK waters appear deadlocked, French fishers say they are ready to mount targeted blockades to stop freight crossing the Channel.
French fishermen mounted a blockade of the ports of Calais and Boulogne, both major hubs for cross-Channel transport, in protest at the use, notably by Dutch fishing fleets, of electric stunning of fish, known as pulse fishing, which they complain is rapidly depleting stocks and which the European Parliament has voted to outlaw.
