Synopsis
A democracy and a dictatorship. A presidential election campaign and dirty money. A deadly war. No-one can make sense of it, or so-believed Nicolas Sarkozy about his links with Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. At his trial in early 2025, public prosecutors called for the former French president to be handed a seven-year jail sentence. This film will allow you to finally make sense of one of the biggest political scandals in France since the Second World War.

Context
The film Personne n’y comprend rien was released in cinema theatres at the same time as the trial opened, in January 2025, of those accused of involvement in the illegal funding of Nicolas Sarkozy’s 2007 presidential election campaign by the regime of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
The film therefore does not include what was debated in court, nor the court’s verdicts pronounced on September 25th 2025.
Those verdicts included the dismissal of the case against Éric Woerth, a former minister under Nicolas Sarkozy’s presidency, and who was the latter’s 2007 election campaign treasurer.
The court also announced the immediate ending of legal action against Nicolas Sarkozy’s lifelong friend Thierry Gaubert. The magistrates ruled that the charge against him of money laundering the proceeds of tax fraud had already been heard in a separate trial in 2004. The court also found that there was no proof that the funds Thierry Gaubert received from Ziad Takieddine in 2006 were intended to be used in Nicolas Sarkozy’s election campaign.
The Franco-Lebanese intermediary Ziad Takieddine died two days before the verdicts were pronounced, which automatically led to the ending of all legal proceedings against him.
As for Nicolas Sarkozy, while he was found guilty of criminal conspiracy and handed a five-year jail sentence, to begin at a date to be determined in October, he was acquitted of the three other charges against him, notably acts of corruption.
The former French president announced he will appeal the verdict.
