Privacy policy
Your personal data
Personal data is any information that can be used to directly (surname, first name, address, etc.) or indirectly (date of birth, login ID, cookie, etc.) identify a natural person. This identification can be made on the basis of a single piece of data or by cross-referencing a set of data.
Historically, the French Data Protection Act of 1978 already defined personal data and the initial means of protecting it. Revised over time and in line with technological developments, it now incorporates the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which came into force at a European level on 25 May 2018.
Mediapart will only collect information that is strictly necessary to provide you with quality content and manage your subscription.
When you subscribe, you are asked to provide us with a username that you can use to comment on articles, participate in the Club (the blog area) and interact with other subscribers or the editorial team. This username is recorded in our audience measurement statistics tools. When you subscribe, in accordance with the French Law on Confidence in the Digital Economy (LCEN), your IP address is recorded at the time of payment.
When subscribing, we also ask you to provide your date of birth and gender, although this is entirely optional. This information helps us to better understand our readership and to personalise certain communications (emails) with our subscribers.
Mediapart is an independent media outlet, with no subsidies, no advertising, no shareholders, and funded solely by the subscriptions from its readers. We do not sell any of our users' data to third parties.
Cookies and other technologies used on Mediapart
What is a cookie ?
The definition of cookies, proposed by the CNIL, is as follows: ‘A cookie is a small file stored by a server on a user's device (computer, telephone, etc.) and associated with a web domain (i.e. in most cases, all the pages of the same website). This file is automatically sent back during subsequent contacts with the same domain.’ You can find more information about cookies on the CNIL website.

Video on demand (VOD) service
Mediapart uses OKAST to provide its video-on-demand (VOD) service, hosted on AWS servers located in Europe.
In this context, OKAST collects certain personal data, namely: surname, first name, email address, and connection data. This information is kept for up to 15 days after the end of the contract.
In addition, OKAST uses several trackers to ensure the proper functioning and optimisation of the service:
- Ad Server Publica: for advertising distribution,
- NPAW: for video performance analysis,
- Firebase: for tracking navigation on the platform.
OKAST specifies that blocking these trackers may cause malfunctions in the use of the service or even prevent access to it altogether.
The data collected by these trackers is stored for a maximum period of 12 months.
For any requests relating to your personal data rights, you can contact OKAST's Data Protection Officer (DPO) directly at the following address: dpo@okast.tv.
