In Nanterre, the town on the western outskirts of Paris where 17-year-old Nahel M. was shot dead on Tuesday, protesters torched cars, barricaded streets and hurled projectiles at police following a peaceful vigil.
There were up to 150 arrests as interior minister Gérald Darmanin attacked what he called a "night of intolerable violence against symbols of the republic, with town halls, schools and police stations set on fire or attacked". It follows the shooting by police of 17-year-old Nahel at Nanterre in the western suburbs of Paris.
Prosecutors say the 17-year-old was in the Paris suburb of Nanterre early on Tuesday when police shot him dead after he broke road rules and failed to stop.
In September 2021, Macron promised €5 billion in government support to freshen up dilapidated schools, improve housing as well as transport links. There was also a pledge to make the streets safer from drug dealers and criminal gangs.
