    In a highly symbolic ceremony, French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday met the 87-year-old widow of Maurice Audin, a communist mathematician who disappeared in 1957 after being arrested by the French military during the seven-year Algerian war of independence, when he apologised to Josette Audin on behalf of the French state and, in the first official admission of its kind, acknowledged the army's systematic use of torture during the conflict.

  • Six held over vegan militant attacks in Lille

    Six people have been detained in the north-east French city of Lille in connection with a series of recent attacks on nine commercial businesses there, including against a butchers shop and a McDonald's fast-food branch, when windows were smashed and fake blood was daubed on walls.

    Speaking in parliament, French foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said the Damascus regime of Bashar al-Assa and its ally Russia might be held to account for war crimes over indiscriminate aerial bombing of 'civilian populations and hospitals' in Idlib, the beseiged last major stronghold of active opposition to the regime.

  • France-based Algerian singer Rachid Taha dies at 59

    Rachid Taha, who settled in France with his family when he was aged ten, and first became known in the 1980s for a series of hits with group Carte de Séjour before launching a solo career with his distinctive mix of traditional North African, rock, techno and dance music, has died at the age of 59 of a heart attack at his home near Paris, his family has announced. 

  • Lyon airport closed after car smashes through terminal onto runway

    A man was arrested on Monday after driving a Mercedes saloon into a terminal building at the airport serving Lyon, France's second-largest city, and then speeding onto the runway area chased by several police cars and an overhead helicopter before he was wrestled to the ground when attempting to flee on foot.

  • Tourists among seven wounded in Paris knife attacks

    British and Egyptian tourists were among seven people stabbed on Sunday night in a popular canal-side location in Paris by a man believed to be an Afghan national who was chased and overpowered by members of the public, notably pétanque players who reportedly threw their iron balls at the assailant's head.
