Carla Bruni has said in an interview that being French First Lady is "a lot less work" than being a supermodel and has finally confirm the worst-kept secret that she is pregnant.

She also insisted she "was not an airhead" and understood her duties as the wife of President Nicolas Sarkozy.

In the interview with French newspaper Nice-Matin, Mrs Bruni spoke of her "unexpected joy" at the prospect of having a second child at the age of 43.

But she said she had no idea whether she was expecting a boy of a girl.

Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy - who has been likened to luxury-loving French Queen Marie-Antionette - laughed off suggestions that being First Lady was a "life of leisure".

She is currently "resting" at the sprawling presidential residence the Fort de Bragancon on the French riviera where she admitted she had "not lifted a finger for days".
