A French prosecutor says the piece of wing discovered in July on a remote Indian Ocean island has been formally identified as having come from the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, reports CBS News.
In a statement, the Paris prosecutor's office said technical analysis of the part, called a flaperon, had enabled investigators to link a serial number found on the part with a corresponding number on the Boeing 777 that disappeared March 8, 2014 with 239 people aboard.
Last month, Malaysia's transport minister said that a Malaysian team in the French territory of Reunion Island had collected other plane debris, including a window and some aluminum foil.
After Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak announced last month that the flaperon belonged to MH370, CBS News correspondent Seth Doane reported that frustrated and angry relatives of the passengers gathered in protest outside the Malaysia Airlines office in Beijing.
