Professional masks and true faces

1 photo

When dressing for work, many professionals lose their true personal appearance and become a symbol of their trade. Work outfits may be required uniforms for the job, as in the case of flight attendants or military personnel, or by the nature of the profession, such as those of judges, priests and performing artists, or also by the inherent dangers of the activity, as with divers, doctors and firefighters. In the series of pictures presented below, photographer Bruno Fert, whose work has regularly appeared in the French and international press, explored the revealing contrast between the appearance of a person in their professional attire and the personal image they project in their private life. The comparison is made all the more striking by Fert’s choice of taking near-identical shots of his subjects in on- and off-duty clothing within the intimacy of their own homes.
