Declaration of interest
In the interest of transparency towards its readers, Mediapart’s journalists fill out and make public since 2018 a declaration of interests on the model of the one filled out by members of parliament and senior civil servants with the High Authority for Transparency and Public Life (HATVP), a body created in 2014 after Mediapart’s revelations on the Cahuzac affair.
The shooting of a rabbi and three young children at a Jewish school in Toulouse in south-west France and the earlier killing of three off-duty French soldiers have shocked the nation. These tragic events occurred as the presidential election entered its final month, forcing the candidates to reconsider their strategies. A Member of Parliament from President Nicolas Sarkozy’s ruling UMP party caused uproar this week after denouncing homosexuals as over-represented “at the heart of power”, likening gay relationships to incest, dismissing the deportation of homosexuals from France during German occupation of the country in WWII as a “great legend”, and describing homosexuality as a state of “narcissism” built on “a stupid theory of genders”. The controversy caused by Christian Vanneste (pictured) erupted the day Sarkozy officially announced his bid for re-election, and coincided with the president’s dismissal of opening up marriage to gay couples “in these troubled times where our society needs points of reference”. France has reached an unprecedented housing crisis, with an estimated 3.6 million people living in inadequate or substandard housing while the country lacks some 900,000 accommodations in the publicly-managed ‘social housing’rented sector. That was the dire message of the latest yearly report released earlier this month by the Fondation Abbé Pierre, one of France’s leading charitable organisations dedicated to improving housing conditions for the poor, which called on presidential election candidates to sign up to a "social contract" to meet the urgent demand for affordable and decent accomodation. Ellen Salvi reports.
The publication this month of a book by three investigative journalists which accuses, through detailed testimony, the head of France’s domestic intelligence services of mounting illegal surveillance operations against the media has led to outcry among journalists and the country’s political opposition. Three Socialist Party MPs this week tabled questions in parliament demanding a government response to several revelations contained in the book, L’Espion du Président (The President’s Spy). Ellen Salvi reports.
Until now, slumlords operating in the poor suburban neighbourhoods surrounding Paris have notoriously escaped legal action through a combination of inertia on the part of local authorities, the fear and lack of alternative accommodation on the part of tenants, and the phantom-like existence of these cash-paid proprietors. But two suburban town halls, in Clichy-sous-Bois and Gennevilliers, have now undertaken a vigorous combat against slum property owners, and are succeeding in bringing them to court. Ellen Salvi reports on a case heard earlier this month, and which reveals a tale of desperate squalor and exploitation that is the daily predicament of thousands living around the capital.

L’enquête préliminaire contre X..., ouverte en janvier 2013 à la suite d’une plainte pour « détournement de biens publics », déposée par un militant écologiste contre le député et maire UMP de Nice, a été classée sans suite le jeudi 7 novembre. Le plaignant pointe du doigt « les étonnantes conclusions des enquêteurs ».
