Chirac 'doing well' after kidney surgery

The 81-year-old former president, head of state from 1995 to 2007, has been in poor health for several years and suffered a stroke in 2005.

Ailing former French president Jacques Chirac has undergone successful kidney surgery, reports Sky News Australia.

'It went very well and he is doing fine,' an associate of the 81-year-old said on Monday, adding that Chirac would be spending several days recovering at the Paris hospital which carried out the operation.

Chirac, who suffered a stroke in 2005, has been in poor health for several years and has recently appeared hesitant and shaky on his feet during his increasingly rare public appearances.
