Foreign visitors have spent fewer nights in French hotels following the terrorist attacks on the country, the tourism minister has said, reports ITV News.

France's tourism industry, an important aspect of the economy, reported a 10% drop in hotel bookings from January to July 2016, compared to a year before.

In an interview with Le Journal du Dimanche, minister Matthias Fekl blamed attacks on the country by so-called Islamic State for the fall in bookings.

In November 2015, gunmen killed 130 people in a coordinated attack in Paris. Last month, a militant killed 85 people when he rammed a truck into a crowd of spectators celebrating Bastille Day in Nice.

Two weeks later, a priest was killed by two men in a small town in Normandy.

Fekl said high-spending visitors from the United States, Asia and the Gulf in particular had been discouraged from visiting the country by the attacks.
