US President Donald Trump has accepted an invitation to join Emmanuel Macron at Bastille Day celebrations in Paris on July 14, the French presidency said today, reports The Telegraph.

Mr Macron's office said Mr Trump will attend the traditional military parade on the Champs-Elysées, where US soldiers will march alongside French troops to commemorate the centenary of the US entering World War I.

Mr Macron made the offer yesterday, following a phone call to the US in which he agreed on a "joint response" in the event of another chemical attack in Syria.

Relations between the world leaders appeared strained in recent weeks, after Mr Macron and Mr Trump engaged in a tight, prolonged handshake when they met in Brussels on 25 May.

“My handshake with him – it wasn’t innocent,” Mr Macron told a French newspaper after the event.

“It’s not the be-all and the end-all of a policy, but it was a moment of truth.”
