French tourists among eight killed by gunmen in Niger

Six French tourists, along with their driver and guide, are reported to have been shot dead by unidentified gunmen on motorcycles in a suspected terrorist attack during a safari in Niger, which lies in a region of West Africa where Boko Haram and groups linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State operate.

Gunmen in Niger have attacked a party of wildlife tourists, killing six French citizens, their local guide and driver, reports BBC News.

The gunmen rode in on motorcycles and opened fire, the governor of Tillabéri region, Tidjani Ibrahim, told the French news agency AFP.

They were in the Koure region which attracts tourists who want to see the last herds of giraffe in West Africa.

It is not yet clear who is behind the attack.

The French government warns people against travelling to large parts of the former French colony outside the capital Niamey.
