World famous classical trumpeter Maurice André has died aged 78, reports BBC News and Agenzia Giornalistica Italia.

From the 1960s onwards the French musician was recognised as a virtuoso of Baroque music. Born in 1933, Andre worked as a miner before his father - an amateur trumpeter himself - encouraged him to take up the instrument professionally.

André went on to make more than 250 recordings before he retired in 2004. He recorded standard pieces featuring the trumpet, including many works by Scarlatti or Bach.

In 1954 he recorded the soundtrack for Federico Fellini's film 'La Strada'. His last concert was held in 2004 before he moved to the Basque Country.
