The body of a 47-year-old woman who was washed out to sea off the Brittany island of Belle-Île was found on Monday, maritime officials said, after strong storms hit northern France, southern England and Wales before moving on to the Netherlands, reports FRANCE 24.

Helicopter crews scoured the sea off Belle-Île in Brittany while search operations both on the coast and in the water were hampered by high winds and six-metre waves.

Sources said the woman had been washed out to sea in an area under high cliffs.

All of Brittany was placed under “Orange” alert on Sunday night in anticipation of the storm, which peaked with 113km/h winds at 4am on Monday.

The “Orange” alert level had been lifted by noon on Monday, just after the woman disappeared.

In England, winds of up to 160 km per hour were recorded at the southern Isle of Wight early Monday.

Meanwhile, toppled trees crushed cars, damaged properties and flooding made some roads impassable in much of southern England.
