French PM threatens to review migration pact with Algeria

François Bayrou’s threat comes after a deadly weekend knife attack in the city of Mulhouse by an Algerian national whom France had unsuccessfully tried to repatriate and against a backdrop of simmering tensions between the two countries.

French prime minister François Bayrou warned on Wednesday that Paris would review a 1968 migration pact with Algiers if the former French colony refused to take back deportees, reports Yahoo! News.

Bayrou’s threat comes after a deadly weekend knife attack in the city of Mulhouse by an Algerian national whom France had unsuccessfully tried to repatriate.

France said on Wednesday it would review a decades-old agreement that makes it easier for Algerian citizens to move to France unless Algeria agrees to take back those who are deported by the French authorities.

Already strained ties between Paris and Algiers have worsened further after an Algerian citizen whom France had long tried unsuccessfully to repatriate killed one person and injured three in a knife attack in the city of Mulhouse on Saturday.
