The French Embassy in Beijing has issued a statement calling for its citizens to be vigilant after a French national was assaulted by a knife-wielding local resident in Shanghai, reports the South China Morning Post.

The Consulate General of France in Shanghai said in a statement on its website on Friday that the victim was attacked on Wednesday by a man who fled after a Chinese colleague intervened. The attacker was later arrested by the Chinese police, it said.

“The French embassy and consulates-general are in constant contact with the Chinese authorities to remind them that the security of French nationals in China is a priority,” the statement said.

Shanghai police said in a statement that the suspect was mentally disabled and his motivation was unclear.

The incident happened at noon on Wednesday on Yongjia Road in Xuhui district, close to the city centre. Police said when they arrived at the site, the victim – a foreign man – had already gone to hospital on his own. He received minor wounds to his neck after being stabbed by a Chinese man, officers said.
