Five people travelling in a private light aircraft were killed when it crashed near the city of Grenoble in south-eastern France, French police have confirmed.

There was no immediate information as to the identities of the dead nor the likely cause of the crash.

The twin-engine plane went down just minutes after take-off, about 50km north-west of Grenoble. According to radio station France Info, an eyewitness described the plane as already on fire before it hit a hillside. France Info said the crash site was uninhabited and mostly woodland.

Some reports say the plane was registered in Morocco and was headed there via Spain.

Grenoble, located at the foot of the Alps, is regarded as the gateway to the region's mountain resorts.
