After a steep rise in the daily number of recorded deaths from the Covid-19 virus on Wednesday, officially due to a statistical anomaly of newly reported deaths that occurred last weekend, the number of fatalities over 24 hours reported on Thursday was slightly down on that of Tuesday, as more people left hospital intensive care for the virus than entered.

At his daily briefing on Thursday evening, Jérôme Salomon, director general of France’s health administration, announced that 753 people had died of the coronavirus infection since Wednesday, 417 of them in hospital and the remainder in care homes.

The latest fatalities bring the total number of deaths in France officially recorded as being caused by infection from the virus to 17,920. Of these, 11,060 occurred in hospitals, while 6, 860 people have died in care homes.

Over the past 24 hours, another 1,823 people infected by the virus were admitted to hospital, but the total number hospitalised was 31,305 – a figure down on that of Wednesday, which was already lower than that of Tuesday when the trend began.

Salomon said the total known number of people infected by the virus in the country had risen over the past 24 hours by 2,641 cases to reach a total of 108,847.

“The circulation of the virus is stabilising at a high level,” Salomon commented. “It is an important indicator but which needs to be confirmed over the coming days.”
