The damning evidence of Russian war crimes in Ukraine

Footage from the war in Ukraine, analysed by Mediapart in this video report, shows how, since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, civilian residential areas around the country have become the systematic target of indiscriminate bombings by Russian forces, and notably with the use of cluster munitions.

In the video below, Mediapart analyses footage that has emerged from the conflict in Ukraine and identifies evidence of war crimes by Russian forces engaged in the indiscriminate targeting of residential areas with the use of cluster bombs. These particularly murderous ground- or air-launched weapons, whose employment is banned by a 2008 international convention ratified by more than 100 countries, but not by Russia or Ukraine, scatter sub-munitions over a wide area, before the missile debris also crashes onto the target.

The video, subtitled in English, includes interviews with Tchérina Jerolon, head of the ‘conflict, migration and justice’ department at the French branch of NGO Amnesty International, and gendarmerie colonel Éric Emeraux, the former head of France’s central agency for investigating crimes against humanity, genocide and war crimes. Both conclude that there is ample evidence that Russia’s use of cluster munitions against civilian targets amounts to war crimes.
