Former French justice minister Christiane Taubira was treated to a standing ovation as she addressed students at New York University on Friday, just two days after quitting France’s Socialist government, reports FRANCE 24.

An icon of the left, Taubira resigned on Wednesday in protest over plans to strip dual nationals of French citizenship if convicted of terrorism.

Her official meetings in the US were cancelled following her resignation. But she kept her engagement with NYU, delivering a speech on equality and justice that delighted her fans in the Big Apple.

Taubira, who hails from French Guiana on the Caribbean coast, shepherded same-sex marriage into law and is seen as a pioneer for women and minorities in French politics.
