A Frenchman was jailed Thursday for calling and texting his ex-girlfriend 21,807 times, reports FRANCE 24.

The man, who cannot be named under French law, admitted in court that, in hindsight, his actions were “stupid”.

The defendant decided to start his epic 10-month barrage of calls and messages when he split from his partner, demanding that she thank him for fixing up their flat.

He had been hospitalised in the past for depression, and struggled to cope when his girlfriend broke off their relationship in 2011.

"At the time, my logic was that until she returned the money ... or at least said thank you, I would not stop the calls," he told the court in Lyon in southeastern France.

And the calls didn’t stop, averaging at 73 a day.

"She tried to block her line, but he phoned her parents instead and her workplace," said Manuella Spee, lawyer for the victim, a 32-year-old teacher who also cannot be named.
