Clermont Foot 63 have appointed the former France captain Corinne Diacre as their coach, replacing Helena Costa, reports The Guardian.

Costa became the first woman coach of a professional men’s club in the top two tiers of any European league when she was appointed by Clermont last month, but the 36-year-old quit on Monday citing personal reasons.

The French second division club have now given the job to another woman, with 39-year-old Diacre signing a two-year contract.

Diacre made 121 appearances for France between 1993 and 2005. She has been an assistant to the national team for the last seven years as well as managing her former club Soyaux since 2010.

Costa quit after just one day of training after male colleagues sidelined her and left her convinced she was just a “face” to attract publicity.
