Greek media reports say Athens is to begin negotiating the purchase from France of two French-Italian-designed FFREM-class multimission frigates, and is eyeing a further deal for two French Gowind-class corvettes.
TheThe Greek Ministry of Defence is reportedly interested in acquiring two FREMM multimission frigates from France, with negotiations over the deal due to start in February, reports DefenseNews.
A Greek source close to the deal told local daily Kathimerini that the decision follows an earlier verbal agreement between French President Emmanuel Macron and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. The Greek order could be expanded by a further two vessels.
The frigates have an estimated tag price of between 500 million euros and 600 million euros ($612 million to $735 million), and the Greek ministry is also considering the purchase of French Gowind-class corvettes for its navy, according to the source.
